Safe Haven for Newborn Babies

Burr Ridge’s Police Station serves as a "safe place" under the Illinois Safe Haven law, meaning Illinois parents can anonymously relinquish their newborn infant to the care and custody of a safe haven within 30 days of the baby's birth. The law was created to protect newborn babies from abandonment and provide immunity from prosecution for parents who relinquish their unharmed newborn to a safe haven.

After a newborn infant is relinquished to a police station, the baby will be transported to the nearest hospital for a health exam and medical treatment, if needed, and will proceed through the adoption process. The process is completely anonymous.
